Dental sealants are a highly effective way to prevent cavities and tooth decay on a person’s back teeth. They consist of a thin layer of acrylic that is painted directly upon the teeth to seal off any deep pits and fissures that are present. This creates an effective barrier against harmful acids and bacteria.
Nearly 75 percent of all tooth decay is located within the deep grooves and fissures found on a person’s back teeth. These areas are very difficult to reach, even with proper brushing and flossing practices. By applying dental sealants, these rough surfaces are made smooth, which makes them much easier to maintain and clean. If dental sealants are properly cared for, they should last for many years.
Dental sealants are often used by children and teenagers who are still developing proper brushing habits. Baby teeth are great candidates for dental sealants since they often feature deep pits and fissures. That said, people of all ages can use dental sealants as a way of protecting their back molars from cavities and decay.
Applying Dental Sealants
Applying dental sealants is a quick and easy process that only requires a couple of minutes per tooth. The teeth that are designated for sealing are all dried and thoroughly cleaned. We will use a cotton swab to keep them dry throughout the procedure. Next, an etching solution is used to roughen the surfaces of the teeth so that they can easily bond with the sealant material.
Once the surfaces of the teeth have been roughened, the solution will be rinsed off, and the teeth will be dried once again. Acrylic sealant will be painted onto the teeth and allowed to fully dry. Finally, we will make sure that the teeth have all been fully sealed and that all of the deep grooves and fissures are adequately sealed off.
