Periodontics, also known as periodontology, is a special sub-field of dentistry that focuses on the supporting structures of the teeth, most notably the gums and mouth bones. Today, periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is one of the most common oral health issues, affecting nearly half of all adults. Gum disease is characterized by infection and inflammation of the gums. If left untreated, the condition can spread to the jawbone and the connective tissues of teeth, and this will eventually result in tooth loss.

At Downriver Smiles, we recognize the seriousness of gum disease. The best way to prevent serious complications is to seek treatment as soon as possible. That is why we urge patients to look out for any signs of periodontal disease and to visit us at their earliest convenience if any symptoms are discovered. Our practice provides patients suffering from gum disease with laser treatments and scaling and root planing procedures.

Laser Treatment

Using a special dental laser, periodontal laser treatments work to access and remove any inflamed gum tissue that is present around the root of a tooth. After the swollen gum tissue has been removed, built-up plaque is scraped away and future infections are prevented by smoothing out any rough spots in the area. During the healing process, the gum line will start to regenerate and properly reattach itself to the teeth. Laser therapy for periodontal disease is often a preferred method of treatment since there is less pain involved, and recovery durations tend to be shorter than with traditional treatments.

Scaling and Root Planing

Designed to remove heavily built-up plaque, tartar and toxins, scaling and root planing is a non-surgical procedure that works both above and below the gum line. During the procedure, a local anesthetic is often used to prevent the patient from experiencing any pain. The scaling process involves using special dental tools to access deep areas that are otherwise very difficult to reach. After the unwanted build-ups have been eliminated, root planing is conducted to smooth rough spots on the root surfaces. This helps to stop future build-ups and initiate the healing process. Overall, scaling and root planing treatment is highly effective in managing periodontal disease and preventing tooth loss.
