Inlays and Onlays
Serving as two alternatives to dental crowns, inlays and onlays are used to restore the appearance and function of damaged teeth. These treatment methods are slightly more intricate than a regular filling, and they provide an end result that is stronger and more durable. At Downriver Smiles, we are proud to offer patients inlays and onlays that look natural and function perfectly.
What makes inlays and onlays unique is that they are built using impressions of the patient’s teeth. Receiving an inlay or onlay requires two visits to our office. During the first visit, the patient will have impressions taken so that their custom inlay or onlay can be constructed. Once it is ready, the patient will return for their second visit to have their inlay or onlay installed.
Consisting of filling material that is bonded to the interior of a tooth, inlays are used when a tooth is damaged in such a way that it cannot be repaired with a standard filling, but a full dental crown would be excessive. An inlay will not cover any of the tooth’s cusps, only the area inside these points. Because of their custom fit, teeth repaired with inlays are typically stronger than teeth that have been treated with a traditional filling.
Unlike an inlay, an onlay will cover at least one of the cusps (points) of a tooth. Most onlays are actually bonded to the cusps themselves. In some cases, a tooth’s entire chewing surface might be covered by an onlay. A great treatment option for restoring the chewing surface of a damaged tooth, an onlay is typically recommended when a full dental crown is unnecessary.
