One of the most effective ways to strengthen tooth enamel and protect teeth from decay is through topical fluoride applications. Fluoride is a naturally occurring substance that is found in small amounts in certain foods and water. At Downriver Smiles, we provide supplemental fluoride applications for individuals who are at a high risk of experiencing tooth decay.
Fluoride helps the teeth in two ways:
- Fluoride attaches to tooth enamel in order to provide strength.
- Fluoride works to restore and remineralize tooth enamel to reverse tooth decay.
Fluoride applications can be completed in a single visit to our clinic. The treatment works by applying fluoride directly to the teeth in the form of a gel, foam or varnish either painted on or using special trays that are worn over the teeth. Once the quick and easy procedure has been completed, the patient may be required to refrain from eating or drinking anything for at least an hour afterward so the fluoride can be fully absorbed by the teeth.
Patients receive professional fluoride treatments for many reasons, including:
- Root surfaces that are exposed or sensitive
- Protecting molars from cavities and decay
- Inadequate oral hygiene
- Lack of fluoride exposure
- Excessive sugar intake
- Prior history of tooth decay
- Poor saliva flow
Although fluoride treatments can be very helpful in preventing cavities and decay, it is important to remember to practice good brushing and flossing habits and to receive regularly scheduled professional teeth cleanings.
