Perhaps better known as mild sedation, anxiolysis sedation is generally provided for patients who are apprehensive or nervous about receiving dental treatment. Unlike other forms of sedation, anxiolysis sedation is not usually used for managing pain. Instead, it is typically offered as a way of helping a patient reduce their anxiety before working on their teeth and gums.
Some common dental treatments in which anxiolysis sedation may be provided include:
- Teeth extractions
- Root canal treatment
- Periodontal services
Patients who receive anxiolysis sedation will be fully aware of their surroundings and completely able to respond to verbal commands while they receive treatment. While anxiolysis sedation is the mildest form of dental sedation available, it can still go a long way towards easing a patient’s nerves.
Anxiolysis sedation can be administered in different ways. Most commonly, it comes in the form of a simple pill or a gas that can be inhaled. Regardless of how it is administered, the process is carefully monitored so that the patient does not receive any unwanted side-effects, while still providing an adequate level of sedation.
